LEARN TO AIRBRUSH TRUE FIRE FLAMESMost people have a tough time learning to airbrush true fire from a simple instruction tutorial. Usually a DVD such as Chuck Bauman's is extremely helpful... but here goes. PAINTING TRUE FIRE FLAMES ON A DARK BACKGROUNDFor the most part, people want to airbrush true fire on black backgrounds. To do this you airbrush in the flames themselves in white. You can use opaque, semi-opaque, or transparent white. Play around and see what you like best. ![]() These are some simple base white flames for your true fire. Be sure to look at lots of photo reference shots of fire to get a good feel for what you are painting. Realize and remember that flames are a source of light , that they are translucent not solid, and that they are in motion and that their motion has some rules to it but overall it is wild, whippy, and irregular. You want to be very careful to not make your flames symmetrical like hot rod stylized flames. The YouTube tutorial video below can help explain this very well and show you how to practice drawing realistic flame shapes before you even pick up the airbrush: Once you have learned to form the basic shapes of real fire, you want to be sure to understand that you want to avoid airbrushing very too many very solid areas or too many solid edges. You want to use templates like we show you how to make in the other YouTube videos in order to make some distinct sharp edges but you must NOT make all of your edges sharp. Some flames edges have to be freehand airbrushed and foggy looking or your flames will look fake. You also want faded smokey foggy areas fading into the flame licks. and smokey, wispy lines or veins within the flame licks -- you can see them in actual flames. Once you airbrush nice realistic-looking flames in white, you then candy color over the white flames. In the case of realistic colored flames (as opposed to weird colors like green or blue), you might create various layers going from reddish orange to orange in two or three layers and caping off the top layer with a few real bright "hot spots" which look yellow - white-ish but are really just lightly misted orange over intense white areas. The fact is you never want to use a regular yellow on your realistic flames art if you are painting on a black background because the yellow and black blend will very easily look green. ![]() These are some flames that have been painted over with reddish-orange candy color paint for the first layer of true fire -- the redder background flames. You then just lay down another layer of different flames in white on top of this and then candy orange over those. Then highlight with some bright spots of white with orange candy very lightly fogged over them for your bright hot spots that will "look" yellow or whitish-yellow. ![]() This is a "finished" sample, not yet clear-coated. The clear coat adds depth making the dark darker and light brighter as seen below:
In addition to watching a camp fire or the flames in a fireplace fire, watching this great YouTube video is an easy way help you get the feel for flames in motion. You can pause and snag screen captures of shots that you really like: LEARN TO AIRBRUSH TRUE FIRE FLAMES ON WHITE BACKGROUNDS![]() These are some simple red true fire flames on a white background.
